Repairs & Relines

Over time your mouth and dentures undergo inevitable changes. Dentures should be replaced every five to seven years to restore optimum fit, function and appearance. In the meantime, regular maintenance of your denture is necessary to ensure comfort and fit of the denture. If your dentures require repair or relining, at Modern Denture we can advise you with most suitable treatment plan.

Dentures need relining or repairing from time to time. Dentures can crack, teeth can break, and repairs can be done usually on the same day at Modern Denture Clinic.

Relines

Relines are required when the bone and tissue in the mouth resorb (shrink). Upon loss or extraction natural teeth, bone shrinkage occurs rapidly for the first 6 to 12 months; after that the bone loss process is more gradual. Relines are needed every 2 to 3 years to ensure optimal fit of your denture. The timeline varies and is patient specific.

Relining consists of adding new base (pink) material to the tissue side of a denture to ensure a snug fit. At Modern Denture, we will take an intra-oral impression inside your existing denture to complete the reline. Relining affects only the fit of your denture and will not change the appearance or address any wear of the denture teeth. Relines are required when tissue changes occur due to resorption (shrinkage) which can be due to:

  • Loss of weight
  • Loss of teeth
  • Loss of bone and tissue
  • Disease or illness

Repairs

Repairs are required when breakage or damage occurs to your existing denture, when one or more teeth need to be added to an existing denture (due to tooth extraction), or because of wear and tear. Often denture teeth and clasps can be added to existing partial dentures when natural teeth are lost.

A proper repair requires addition of new denture base (pink) material to the repair area and may require an intra-oral impression prior to repair. At Modern Denture Clinic most repairs can easily be done on the same day. If your denture requires a repair, it may indicate underlying problems associated with the age of the denture, worn teeth or poor fit.

We strongly recommend to do not attempt to repair or alter your dentures yourself. Improperly repaired dentures (with Krazy Glue®) will not last long and may cause irritation due to the poor fit and have an adverse effect on your overall health. It is best to leave the denture repair to the professionals that have all the tools and training to ensure optimal result. Contact us at Modern Denture with any denture repair emergencies and book you same day denture repair.
